Piazzolla and the avant-garde — Nuevo Tango

Astor Piazzolla fused tango with the improvisation of jazz and the counterpoint of classical music, opening up Nuevo Tango (new tango). At first he met fierce resistance from traditionalists, but the world gradually embraced him.

In 1959, while in New York, Piazzolla learned of his father's death and composed “Adiós Nonino.” The following year, 1960, he premiered it with his Quinteto Nuevo Tango — bandoneón, violin, piano, electric guitar and double bass. It became his signature work and lifted tango onto the world stage.
