La Guardia Vieja (the Old Guard)
The first era, in which tango took shape.
In the early 20th century tango established its structure and identity. Musicians such as Ángel Villoldo, Francisco Canaro and Roberto Firpo represent this Guardia Vieja (Old Guard).
Pieces like Villoldo's “El Choclo” were widely loved, and tango spread from the margins of the port to the whole city — and eventually across the ocean to Paris.
